University of Texas Rio Grande Valley hires WVU assistant coach Derek Matlock

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–West Virginia University’s right-hand man to baseball coach Randy Mazey has accepted a head coaching job with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

According to national college baseball writer Kendall Rogers of d1baseball.com, pitching coach/ recruiting coordinator Derek Matlock will be introduced as the Vaqueros new head coach in a 1 p.m. press conference June 10.

Mazey hired Matlock the day after he was hired in June of 2012. During his five seasons with the Mountaineers, Matlock had remarkable success with the pitching staff. He produced nine MLB draftees from the mound.

And several WVU pitchers have earned national accolades during his tenure with the team.
Matlock came to Morgantown after spending five straight winning seasons as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for Texas State.
He has also been instrumental to the recruiting aspect of WVU baseball. Matlock recruited sophomore catcher Ivan Gonzalez and played a key role in the Mountaineers landing Alek Manoah.
This will be Matlock’s first college head-coaching job. He will be replacing Manny Mantrana, who resigned last month after nine seasons with the team.
