West Virginia Announces Military-Themed Uniforms Ahead of Oklahoma State Game

The 4-4 West Virginia Mountaineers have announced their uniforms for the upcoming game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and it’s a unique one.

The Mountaineers will be wearing white helmets with one side having the American flag inside the state of West Virginia and the other side having the flying WV decal.  They will wear their home blue jerseys with white pants to match it.

As far as the actual combination goes, the white, blue, white look has only been worn twice in recent years, although it was the signature look for the Mountaineers in the 1960s and 1970s before the flying WV was created.  The games where white, blue, white was worn are as follows:

  • 2014 vs. Kansas State (Throwback white helmets) (26-20 Kansas State)
  • 2017 vs Iowa State (20-16 WVU)

The particular decal alignment on the helmet for Saturday’s game is one that WVU fans have not seen before.  In 2019 and 2020, the team used the American flag/state of West Virginia decals on their blue helmets for a few games.

  • 2019 vs. Texas Tech (38-17 Texas Tech)
  • 2020 vs. TCU (24-6 WVU)
  • 2020 AutoZone Liberty Bowl vs. Army (24-21 WVU)

Another time we’ve seen the Mountaineers honor the Armed Forces with their helmets, was during Veteran’s Day weekend of 2017.   WVU wore their white helmets and they added an American flag look to the flying WV decal.  This helmet was worn when the Mountaineers took down Kansas State on the road by the score of 28-23.

West Virginia and Oklahoma State will kick off at 3:30 p.m. from Milan Puskar Stadium.  It is Military Appreciation Day at Mountaineer Field and former star quarterback Major Harris will have his No. 9 retired as well.
