West Virginia Picked Fourth in Big 12 Preseason Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 7, 2021)  The West Virginia University women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in this year’s Big 12 Preseason Poll, the conference announced Thursday.

For the 11th time since 2006, Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 regular-season title, after receiving seven first-place votes. Iowa State and Texas tied for second, with the Longhorns receiving two first-place votes and the Cyclones earning one. No. 4 West Virginia was followed by Oklahoma in fifth, TCU in sixth and Oklahoma State in seventh. Kansas State and Texas Tech tied for eighth, while Kansas sits at 10th.

The poll was voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.

The Mountaineers were picked to finish fifth in last year’s preseason poll. WVU posted a record of 22-7, including a 13-5 mark in Big 12 play, and finished second in the league at the end of the regular season in 2020-21.

The Mountaineers opened official practice on Oct. 6. The 2021-22 college basketball season opens Tuesday, Nov. 9, while Big 12 play is scheduled to begin on Sunday, Jan. 2.

West Virginia officially opens the 2021-22 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 16, when the team welcomes Saint Francis (Pa.) to Morgantown for the season opener. Prior to that, WVU will host an exhibition against WVU Tech at the WVU Coliseum on Thursday, Oct. 28.
