MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 28, 2021) – The West Virginia University rifle team checked in at No. 3 in the preseason Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, the organization announced.
The 2021 NCAA Champion Kentucky came in as the preseason No. 1, while Ole Miss followed behind in second place. Behind the Mountaineers, TCU ranked No. 4, while Alaska-Fairbanks ranked fifth.
Along with West Virginia, Kentucky and Ole Miss, the other six members of the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) also were featured in the poll, including No. 7 Memphis, No. 9 Army, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 11 Akron, No. 12 Navy and No. 14 NC State.
WVU finished the 2020-21 season with a 7-1 record, including a 5-1 mark in the GARC. The Mountaineers qualified for its 14th consecutive NCAA Rifle Championships and finished the season ranked No. 4 nationally in the CRCA poll. West Virginia also captured its conference-best 14th GARC title a season ago, after shooting a two-day total of 4727 at the conference championships. At season’s end, a program-record nine shooters earned a combined, 22 CRCA All-America honors, while nine athletes also took home 21 All-GARC honors.
West Virginia’s 2021-22 campaign gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 2, when the Mountaineers travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face off against No. 2 Ole Miss. Saturday’s start time will be announced later this week.
