West Virginia’s men’s and women’s soccer team shined, as well as volleyball winning their first three matches, in a good week for West Virginia athletics.
As fall sports are now underway, seasons for men’s soccer and volleyball got off to good starts this week.
Volleyball played in the Old Dominion University Invitational, and played three matches, and winning all three of them. West Virginia defeated Loyola 3-0, Old Dominion 3-0, and Hampton 3-1.
“It was a good weekend for us,” WVU volleyball head coach Reed Sunahara said. “We learned a lot about ourselves. We have a lot to work on in a short time as we start preparing for Michigan and Navy. We have to keep getting 1 percent better.”
Men’s soccer also got their season underway this week. After playing in three exhibitions the last couple of week’s, Dan Stratford’s squad played its first real match on Thursday against Robert Morris. West Virginia won 2-0, and now returns home for a big week against two rivals. West Virginia plays host to No. 3 Pitt on Monday night, and No. 11 Penn State on Friday.
West Virginia women’s soccer team got back on track after losing to No. 4 Virginia last Sunday. The Mountaineers beat Bucknell 3-1 on Friday, and then play host to Duquesne on Sunday. After Sunday, West Virginia will turn their attention to Thursday, when they host No. 7 Penn State.
This upcoming week is also week one of the football season. Football will travel to Maryland and take on the Terrapins at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.
