West Virginia women hold off Selecció Catalana

The West Virginia University women’s basketball team picked up its third win on the European tour on Tuesday evening with a, 66-53, win over Selecció Catalana at Pavelló Esportiu Municipa.

The two teams battled through a close first quarter before the Mountaineers pulled away. WVU outscored Selecció Catalana, 22-5, in the second quarter and took a commanding 20-point lead at the half.

Selecció Catalana rallied to within nine with fewer than three minutes in the game, but the Mountaineers hung on to win.

Junior Teana Muldrow had game-highs with 22 points and five rebounds.  Katrina Pardee scored 11 points. Freshman guard Tynice Martin added 10.

WVU outmanned Selecció Catalana on the boards for the second consecutive night, 34-17. The Mountaineers also had 12 steals.

Selecció Catalana outscored WVU 21-17 in the third quarter. And they pulled within nine with 2:42 remaining in the fourth.

Muldrow had eight of WVU’s 16 first quarter points, as the team held on to a 16-13 lead. The Mountaineers dominated the second quarter 22-5 and led 38-18 at halftime. Anja Martin had six of her eight points during that period.

Jessica Morton sealed the win with a layup to put WVU back in front by double-figures.

 

Blanca Garcia netted 14 points for Selecció Catalana and Marta Claret added 11.

West Virginia finishes the European tour on Thursday, August 13 with an 8 p.m. CET/2 p.m. ET game against CREF Hola Madrid in Madrid, Spain.
