Wolf, Mountaineers down Mercer in series opener

MACON, Ga.–Jackson Wolf pitched a gem as West Virginia defeated Mercer 6-0 on Wednesday night.

The junior south paw tossed 6.1 scoreless frames. Wolf (3-1) struck out seven and walked just one batter.

Braden Zarbnisky and Victor Scott both had two hits for the Mountaineers (9-4).

WVU scored six runs on 10 hits. The Bears (11-2) had just five hits and no runs.

Tanner Hall (3-1) pitched five innings for Mercer. He gave up three runs on four hits while fanning eight.

WVU got on the scoreboard first in the first inning. Zarbnisky led off with a base hit to left field and then stole second and third. The senior scored on Tyler Doanes’ groundout. Back-to-back errors by Mercer gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, WVU extended its lead to 3-0 when Austin Davis doubled home Zarbnisky.

Ryan Archibald’s solo shot to center field made it a 4-0 game. Then the Mountaineers tacked on an additional run on Scott’s RBI single to left field.

WVU picked up another run in the ninth.

The Mountaineers and Bears resume action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
