Women’s Soccer Storms Back to Beat Missouri
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 24, 2014) – The No.10 West Virginia University women’s soccer team stormed back to score 3 unanswered goals to earn its first win of the season against the Missouri Tigers 3-2, at the Penn State Invitational.
Down two goals in the 47th minute, the Mountaineers upped their pressure, rattling off three goals and shutting down the Tigers’ chances.
WVU finished the match with an advantage in shots (18-12) and shots on-goal (8-7). Corner kick opportunities were even at two for each team, while the Tigers tallied 11 fouls to WVU’s four. Maloney, Schwindel and junior forward Kailey Utley combined for 12 shots today.
“The team came out strong today, but we made two mistakes that Missouri capitalized on, and you can’t allow that,” said Izzo-Brown. “I think we showed a lot of resiliency today, and we were finally able to finish.
Taylor Grant scored two goals for the Tigers, in the seventh minute and the 47th. The Mountaineers wouldn’t go quietly, they made a furious comeback in the final 37 minutes and got the go-ahead goal from Kate Schwindel with 1:38 left in the match.
The catalyst that the Mountaineers were looking for came in the form of Junior forward Kelsie Maloney who had a part in all three goals, finishing with four points (1 goal, 2 Assists).
Kate Schwindel also had four points, scoring WVU’s first goal and the game winner.
Junior Hannah Steadman made five saves in the win, while Mizzou’s McKenzie Sauerwein also finished with five saves.
The Mountaineers open their 2014 home season at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this Friday, Aug. 29, against No. 12 Duke, at 7:30 p.m. The match is a “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas are available for $1 each. It is a “Gold Rush,” with all fans encouraged to wear gold in support of the Mountaineers. Additionally, all fans will receive a 2014 women’s soccer schedule poster.
The Mountaineer Ticket Office is now offering a Varsity Sports Flex Plan, a bargain for families who plan on attending a WVU varsity sporting event. Flex plan packages are available for just $20. A package provides 10 vouchers redeemable for single game tickets at any of these WVU sporting events: women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling.
