WVU 12 Days of Christmas: Day Five

On the fifth day of Christmas, what will West Virginia give to me?

Over the next 12 days, we will be making a West Virginia themed 12 days of Christmas in regard to West Virginia sports.

On the fifth day of Christmas West Virginia gave to me Pat White’s number retired.

To say Pat White does not deserve to have his number retired baffles me. White was one of the most iconic players in college football while he was at West Virginia and helped put a program on the national stage on a yearly basis. White went 4-0 in bowl games, including beating No. 8 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and No. 3 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

This season saw two other Mountaineer legends get their number retired and now it is White’s turn. Arguably the greatest quarterback in West Virginia history. White was a four-year starter, and was one of the winningest quarterbacks in college football history. In four seasons as a starter, White accounted for more than 10,500 yards and more than 100 touchdowns.

Former Mountaineer kicker Pat McAfee has been on record saying West Virginia should retire Pat’s number.
