A position of need heading into the 2017 season that wasn’t addressed in the recruiting class was the cornerback position but the staff had their eyes on a graduate transfer and tonight landed that target when former Syracuse cornerback Corey Winfield committed to WVU.

Winfield committed to Syracuse as part of their 2013 class but was redshirted his first season on campus. After playing mainly on special teams his second season, Winfield became a starter during his sophomore season and recorded 30 tackles, 2 sacks, and a pair of interceptions.

But this past season is where Winfield left his mark on the Orange defense. Winfield started every game his junior season, recording 41 tackles (including four games of five or more tackles) with four breakups and one interception.

Winfield will join a rebuilt West Virginia defensive backfield and looks to have the inside track to a starting job this upcoming season which will be big for Tony Gibson to have an experienced cornerback in his 3-3-5 scheme.
