WVU beats Mercer in extra innings

MACON, Ga.–West Virginia defeated Mercer 2-1 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon to take the three-game series.

Braden Zarbnisky (1-0) earned the win for the Mountaineers (10-5). Tommy Green (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bears (12-3).

WVU scored two runs on five hits while Mercer scored one run on four hits.

In the bottom of the second, the Bears took a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers tied the game in the fourth when Matt McCormick doubled to right center, scoring Vince Ippoliti.

After six scoreless innings, WVU took a 2-1 lead in the 11th on a Paul McIntosh solo blast to center field.

Zarbnisky walked the first batter in the bottom half of the frame before retiring the next three batters he faced.

The Mountaineers return home on Wednesday to take on Liberty at 3 p.m.
