CANCUN, Mexico–Miles McBride scored 18 points and ignited West Virginia’s rally in the second half as the Mountaineers overcame a 15-point deficit to beat Northern Iowa 60-55 in the semifinals of the Cancun Challenge on Tuesday night.
WVU (5-0) trailed 42-27 when the Panthers’ (6-1) Isaiah Brown drained a 3-pointer with 10:31 left in the second half. However, the Mountaineers refused to back down.
Jermaine Haley hit a jumper and Sean McNeil buried a 3 to pull WVU within 46-40 with 6:47 remaining.
The Mountaineers took a 51-50 lead when McBride nailed a 3-pointer and a jumper but Trae Berhow responded with a 3 of his own to put UNI back in front 53-51 with 2:21 to play.
Culver made a pair of free throws to tie the game 53-all before the Panthers took their final lead on Justin Dahl’s jumper.
Emmitt Matthews Jr. made a free throw and his tip-in off the missed on put WVU on top for good.
Haley had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Brown led UNI with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
WVU shot 37 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from beyond the arc and 64 percent from the charity stripe.
The Panthers shot 40 percent from the floor, an abysmal 15 percent from 3 and 66.7 percent from the line.
WVU takes on Wichita State in the finals on Wednesday night. The Shockers beat South Carolina 70-47.
