WVU defeats Kansas on a walk-off wild pitch, sweeps doubleheader

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–For a second straight game, No. 20 West Virginia pulled out the magic and walks off Kansas 4-3 on a wild pitch in 11 innings.

With runners on the corners and one out, Blake Goldsberry delivered a 1-1 pitch to Marques Inman, which got away from catcher Nolan Metcalf and scored Brandon White from third to sweep the doubleheader.

After a lengthy rain delay, the Mountaineers (24-13, 8-6 Big 12) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Inman scored on a wild pitch and then Phillip Dull’s single through the left side scored Tristen Hudson.

However, the Jayhawks (19-18, 4-10) tied the game in the ninth on Rudy Karre’s two-out single up the middle.

WVU scored four runs on 11 hits. Kansas scored three runs on nine hits.

Sam Kessler (4-3) picked up the win for the Mountaineers.

Tyler Doanes, Ivan Gonzalez, Dull and White all had two hits apiece for WVU.

The Jayhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Nolan Metcalf homered to left center. However, the Mountaineers responded in the bottom half of the frame when Paul McIntosh blasted one to left center.

WVU picks up its fourth consecutive series win. The Mountaineers have won in walk off fashion in three of their last four games.

The two teams resume action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (ET).
