WVU deletes “Holgorsen clause” from Gibson’s contract

Days after West Virginia University athletic director Shane Lyons announced Dana Holgorsen would return for the 2016 season Lyons amended defensive coordinator Tony Gibson’s contract removing the “Holgorsen clause”.

The original three year contract, signed prior to this season, guaranteed Gibson for 2017 only if Holgorsen remained the head coach of the Mountaineers. The new amended contract deletes that stipulation and guarantees Gibson’s contract through the 2017 season no matter Holgorsen’s fate.

Gibson made $650,000 this season and is set to make $750,000 next season. The new contract guarantees Gibson $700,00 in 2017.

Gibson has been tied to numerous head coaching vacancies over the last month and even more coordinator positions with power 5 conference schools. Gibson put an end to all speculation late last week on Twitter with this:
