MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – (September 26, 2020) – The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s soccer team was defeated by the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in double overtime on Friday night by a score of 2-1.
The No. 4-ranked Mountaineers traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the No. 6-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls in a long 109-minute match. West Virginia and Oklahoma State entered last night’s game with both beating Iowa State and Kansas State respectively.
For the first half of the game, there were zero goals scored by either WVU or OKST. West Virginia took six shots in the first half, while Oklahoma State took three shots. It wasn’t until the fifth minute of the second half where the Cowgirls struck the board first.
With 14 minutes left in regulation, WVU midfielder, Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel found the net for the Mountaineers with a unique goal. The senior from Spain had a free-kick to where the Oklahoma State goalkeeper didn’t handle the save correctly after it bounced off of the goal post.
After the Mountaineers and Cowgirls traded a goal apiece in the second half, 90 minutes of regulation had passed, and the two were off to overtime. Then after 10 minutes of excellent defense by both teams, WVU and OKST headed to a second overtime.
With 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Oklahoma State broke the tie and sent WVU back to Morgantown with a heartbreaking loss. West Virginia coach Nikki Izzo-Brown think this loss will be a good rock to build on for the remaining games of the season.
“Sometimes losses can be the best lessons,” Izzo-Brown said. “Now, we have to be even more determined and focused to make sure we fix our mistakes in order to win next Friday at home.”
Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown also thought the team played very well despite the loss.
“I thought everyone put their hearts on their sleeves and went after it tonight. We had chances, and we had some really good moments, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to complete it.”
The West Virginia Mountaineers will take on the Texas Longhorns next Friday on October 2nd at 7 P.M. The game will be played in Morgantown at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
