FORT WORTH, Texas–Isaiah Esdale caught a huge touchdown pass and West Virginia’s defense stood tall twice, lifting the Mountaineers to a 20-17 victory over TCU on Friday afternoon.
Esdale caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jarret Doege with 2:10 left to give WVU (5-7, 3-6 Big 12) the lead.
The game-winning drive came from two huge penalties. First, a pass interference call on a fourth down and then Horned Frogs’ defensive tackle Ross Blacklock was ejected after being whistled for targeting two plays prior to the touchdown.
For the third time in Gary Patterson’s tenure with the school, TCU (5-7, 3-6) failed to become bowl eligible.
Doege completed 20 of 35 passes for 158 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Mountaineers got on the board first. Freshman Tykee Smith nabbed his second interception of the season of Max Duggan and brought it into the red zone.
Doege found Leddie Brown for a touchdown pass.
The Horned Frogs tied the game shortly after when Sewo Olonilua scored from the two after Taye Barber’s 64-yard run took the ball to WVU’s 11-yard line.
The two teams exchanged field goals before heading to the half tied at 10-all.
Kennedy McKoy ended his career with 51 yards on nine carries.
