WVU knocks off Texas Tech, advances to semifinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo.–Emmitt Matthews Jr. scored 28 points and No. 10-seeded West Virginia hung on to beat No. 2-seeded Texas Tech.

The Mountaineers (13-19) dominated the Red Raiders (26-5) in the first half and jumped out to a 38-29 lead at the half.

After the break, WVU remained in control and took its largest lead at 63-47 with 8:38 left after Matthews sank a 3-pointer.

However, Texas Tech went on a 20-5 run and took their first lead since early in the first half with 2:03 remaining on Jarrett Culver’s layup.

But the Mountaineers went on an 11-5 run to regain the lead.

Culver missed a 3 with 20 seconds left and Matthews sealed the victory with two free throws.

McCabe tallied 13 points. Jermaine Haley had 11 points and Lamont West added 11.

Culver recorded 26 points and 10 boards for the Red Raiders. Tariq Owens chipped in 13 points. Matt Mooney had 13 points and Davide Moretti 10.

WVU outrebound Texas Tech 44-30.

The Mountaineers shot 39 percent from the floor, 37 percent from beyond the arc and 91 percent from the charity stripe.

The Red Raiders shot 46 percent from the field, 33 percent from long range, and 89 percent from the line.

WVU advances to the semifinal and will play the winner of the Texas/ Kansas game at 9 p.m. (ET).
