WVU will open up their 2018 football season against the Tennessee Volunteers on September 1, 2018 in Charlotte, NC. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. With neutral site games becoming the norm across the college football landscape it should be no surprise that WVU is taking advantage of the financial windfall all others have been experiencing for years.
Both WVU and Tennessee will receive $2.5 million for playing against each other at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Each school has also been allotted 12,000 tickets for the game giving each school the possibility of bringing in an additional $700,000 from ticket sales.
The Mountaineers have played two games in Bank of America Stadium, formerly Ericcson Stadium. WVU lost to UVA 48-22 in the Continental Tire Bowl in 2002. WVU’s last game in Charlotte was in 2008 when the Mountaineers beat UNC 31-30 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
This is the 3rd neutral site game WVU has scheduled recently. The Mountaineers will play BYU at FedEx Field in Landover Maryland in 2016 and will face Virginia Tech on the same field a year later in 2017. The Mountaineers open their 2014 season against Alabama at a neutral site game in Atlanta, Georgia on August 30th.
