MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–West Virginia defeated Kent State 9-7 on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the three-game series.
The Mountaineers (8-5) scored nine runs on nine hits. The Golden Flashes (4-9) scored seven runs on 13 hits.
Ryan Bergert (1-0) picked up the win and Sam Kessler earned his third save of the season.
Tyler Doanes had three hits and three RBIs. Kevin Brophy had two hits and drove in five runs,
WVU struck first when Ivan Gonzalez scored on Brophy’s sacrifice fly to left field.
In the bottom of the third, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 2-0 on Doanes’ solo shot.
However, Kent State took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Pete Schuler and Nick Elsen both homered during the frame. The Golden Flashes took the lead on Kevin Dobos’ sacrifice fly.
WVU responded in the bottom half when Kevin Brophy’s double plated Gonzalez. Then Doanes picked up his second RBI of the day when his double to left center scored Austin Davis to give the Mountaineers a 4-3 advantage.
Kent State regained the lead in the top of the sixth after scoring two runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, WVU struck again. Brophy blasted a three-run homer to right center, giving the Mountaineers a 7-5 lead.
But WVU wasn’t done there. Doanes singled home Tevin Tucker. Then Davis scored on Brandon White’s fly out to center to give the Mountaineers a 9-5 edge.
The Golden Flashes refused to go away and Elsen cut Kent State’s deficit to two in the top of the seventh with a two-run dinger to left field.
Kessler came on in the ninth and closed out the game for WVU.
The Mountaineers travel to Morehead State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
