Tyler Sumpter—a 5-foot-10 redshirt senior, originally from Alabama, was awarded a scholarship tonight. Sumpter played under Neal Brown for two seasons at Troy University before walking on as a Mountaineer in 2020.
In 2020, Sumpter appeared in nine games. He ranked fourth in the Big 12 in punting and punted four times for 168 yards in the Liberty Bowl against Army. He went for a season-high eight punts against Baylor, totaling 289 yards.
Sumpter had a successful career before becoming a Mountaineer. During his time at Troy he earned two All-Sun Belt Conference honors in 2018 and 2019 as a punter. Sumpter is the third WVU walk-on to receive a scholarship.
