MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–WVU quarterback Skyler Howard was one of 90 players added to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award on Tuesday afternoon. The award is given to the nation’s best college football player by the Maxwell Football Club.
The accolade was named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell and has been awarded since 1937. Maxwell’s contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
Last season, the 6-foot, 207-pound Howard completed 221-of-403 passes for 3,145 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was the Cactus Bowl Offensive MVP after throwing for 532 yards and five touchdowns in the 43-42 win over Arizona State. The seniors’ 3,647 yards of total offense ranked No. 3 in school history and his 3,145 passing yards ranked as fifth best in season history.
The Big 12 has 12 candidates on the watch list.
Maxwell candidates representing the Big 12 are KD Cannon, WR (Baylor), Shock Linwood, RB (Baylor), Seth Russell, QB (Baylor), Mike Warren, RB (Iowa State), Baker Mayfield, QB (Oklahoma), Samaje Perine, RB (Oklahoma), Mason Rudolph, QB (Oklahoma State), James Washington, WR (Oklahoma State), Deante’ Gray, WR (TCU), KaVontae Turpin, WR (TCU), Patrick Mahomes II, QB (Texas Tech) and Howard.
The Big 12 has had four winners of the Maxwell Award in years past.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 31, while the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 21. The winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 8.
