MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Trailing by four, West Virginia rallied late in the game to beat Kent State 8-4 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (8-5) scored eight runs on 11 hits. The Golden Flashes (4-9) scored four runs on nine hits.
Gabe Kurtzhals (1-0) earned the win for WVU. He pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Zach Reid earned his first save of the season.
John Matthews (0-4) suffered the loss for Kent State.
Darius Hill, Marques Inman and Paul McIntosh all had two hits for the Mountaineers.
The Golden Flashes struck first in the top of the second. With one out, Patrick Ferguson singled to center field and scored on Nick Elsen’s triple to right center. Kent State made it 2-0 on Josh Hollander’s bunt base hit back to Wolf.
In the top of the sixth, the Golden Flashes tacked on two more runs. However, WVU didn’t back down.
Darius Hill’s single plated Tyler Doanes in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to three. Then Marques Inman drove in Brandon White with a base hit to center. With one out, McIntosh blasted a three-run bomb off the right foul pole, giving the Mountaineers a 5-4 lead.
Marques Inman extended WVU’s lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI triple. Then Ivan Gonzalez followed suit with a base hit, plating Inman from third. Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch, giving WVU an 8-4 lead.
The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
