WVU Sports Weekly: Basketball and Wrestling end the week strong just in time for the holidays

Sports have been at an all-time high so far this year for the Mountaineers. Even though the holiday season is approaching quickly, the Mountaineers continue to put in the work.

This week has been a very busy week for WVU, from men’s and women’s basketball to wrestling. Both sports have been going on the past few days.

Starting off with the wrestling team, it was announced earlier this week that West Virginia was set to host the first tri-meet of the season on Monday, Dec. 20. The mountaineers were able to lock in and come out strong on that Monday when they closed out 2021 on a four-dual winning streak.

The women’s basketball team has been going strong through this week. The team participated in the Palm Beach Invitational. This week the Mountaineers took a hard loss against South Florida on Monday, but they left everything on the court, even with the game ending in a 22-point defeat. On Tuesday, , the Mountaineers finished their time in West Plam by winning against Michigan State. WVU was able to take the win over Michigan State with a score of 74-54.

The women’s basketball team going into the holiday season with an overall record of 7-3.

The men’s basketball team has been going strong in their Big East/Big 12 Battle, with the most recent game being against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Mountaineers played very well both offensively and defensively on the court. WVU took the game with a slight advantage over UAB with a score of 65-69. “I thought we were better down the stretch,” WVU coach Bob Huggins said.

Looking forward further into this week men’s basketball faced Youngstown State on Wednesday night at the Coliseum. The Mountaineers ended their week with a victory over the Penguins with a score of 82-52, closing out a perfect month of December and go into the New Year with a 10-1 record.

WVU sports completely dominated in their games for this week and ended the week just in time for the holidays.

With all of the excitement going on the WVU Football team is waiting for their time to shine. The team will be ending their season by playing in the Guaranteed Rate bowl, in Phoenix, Arizona on December 28th against Minnesota Golden Gophers. The bowl game is set to begin at 10:15 PM EST.
