WVU Sports Weekly: Fall Sports getting into conference play

This past week was not the best of weeks for Mountaineer fans. Volleyball, football, and men’s soccer all failed to get victories, however men’s soccer did pick up a draw.

No. 12 Women’s soccer was supposed to be in action Friday night, but due to circumstances with Oklahoma’s flight, they had to push it back to Saturday. The time change did not change the Mountaineers play, as they defeated the Sooners 2-0.

Head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown was really impressed with the way her team played and made adjustments throughout the game.

“I thought everybody really recognized where we had to make some adjustments,” Izzo-Brown said. “We were able to find the win, and it was a big win for us because Oklahoma has a very good side.”

Volleyball tried to knock off the top of the top in college volleyball as they traveled to face No. 1 Texas. The Mountaineers struggled in both matches, losing 3-0, 3-0.

Men’s soccer began conference action in what will be there last season in the MAC. The No. 3 Mountaineers hosted Akron, and despite getting a few good chances, the Mountaineers could not convert — resulting in a 0-0 draw. Men’s soccer will have two matches this week, including a conference matchup on Saturday.

Football hosted its annual homecoming game, this time against Texas Tech. West Virginia got down 17-0 and fought its way back in the third quarter to tie it at 17. West Virginia’s defense was unable to stop Texas Tech however as the Red Raiders kicked a go-ahead field goal with 0:18 left in the game, before ultimately falling 23-20.

West Virginia tennis was in action this weekend as well. The team had a solid weekend in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s Atlantic Regional. West Virginia will be sending a few of its members to the Super Regional Tournament.

Rifle got its season underway this weekend as well. The Mountaineers defeated No. 2 Ole Miss and No. 8 Murray State this weekend and are now 1-0 in GARC conference action.
