WVU Sports Weekly: Soccer, Football, Volleyball all pick up wins

This past week was an eventful week for West Virginia athletics. The Mountaineer men’s and women’s soccer teams picked up big wins over the weekend, while football and volleyball did the same against Iowa State.

Women’s soccer started the week with a 2-1 loss against Oklahoma State on Thursday. It was a quick turnaround for the Mountaineers, who traveled to Round Rock, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Tournament.

No. 3 seed West Virginia beat No. 6 seed Baylor 1-0 on Sunday night. The Mountaineers now turn their attention to Texas who they will face on Thursday night in the semifinals.

Men’s soccer had to big victories against a pair of Georgia teams. On Thursday, the Mountaineers defeated Georgia State 2-1 at home, and then traveled to face Georgia Southern on Sunday, winning 5-0. The Mountaineers now sit at 3-1-1 in conference play and sits in second place in the MAC with one game left in the regular season.

Football was able to piece together its second straight victory. The Mountaineers beat No. 22 Iowa State 38-31. West Virginia had two receivers get more than 100 yards, with the defense forcing a fumble at the goal line late in the fourth quarter.

Volleyball traveled to Iowa State and split two matches against the Cyclones. West Virginia lost 3-1 on Saturday and then won 3-1 on Sunday, getting their first victory at Iowa State in program history. West Virginia still has a month left of their season, including three conference matchups still left.

Thursday, Nov. 4: Women’s Soccer vs Texas, Volleyball vs Kansas, Men’s Soccer vs Bowling Green

Friday, Nov. 5: Volleyball vs Kansas

Saturday, Nov. 6: Football vs Oklahoma State, Rifle vs TCU

Sunday, Nov. 7: Women’s Soccer Big 12 Championship (if necessary)
