WVU Tops Lehigh, Moves on to Second Round

SAN ANTONIO, Texas–Kysre Gondrezick scored 26 points as No. 4-seeded West Virginia defeated Lehigh 77-53 in their NCAA first round matchup at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.

The Mountaineers held the Mountain Hawks to a season-low point total.

KK Deans scored 19 points and Esmery Martinez recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

“We have to be sharper,” said WVU head coach Mike Carey. “We should have done a lot better defensively. We gave them some wide-open looks.”

After falling behind early, WVU went on a 7-0 run and led 15-13 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the two teams exchanged lengthy scoring runs. Gondrezick drained back-to-back 3s to give the Mountaineers a 23-15 lead. However, Lehigh responded with an 11-3 burst to tie the contest at 26-26.

WVU answered by going on a 10-run to take a 36-26 lead at the half.

“I thought we took a bunch of bad shots in the first quarter,” Carey said. “But I thought in the second quarter and in the third quarter we played a lot better. So we have to continue to get better.”

The Mountaineers continued to excel in the third quarter, going on a 16-0 run to end the quarter with a 65-39 lead.

Emma Grothaus had 14 points for Lehigh.

Gondrezick surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the third quarter.

WVU will face fifth-seeded Georgia Tech on Tuesday in the second round.

The Mountaineers shot 55 percent from the field and 53 percent from beyond the arc.

The Mountain Hawks shot 31 percent from the floor and 33 percent from 3-point range.
