The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is headed back to the NCAA tournament.
After finishing with a 10-2-1 record this season, it was announced on Monday, that the Mountaineers are the No. 5 overall seed in the 2020-2021 NCAA women’s soccer tournament. West Virginia finished second in the Big 12 in their fall conference only schedule and then beat No. 9 Duke 3-2, and then beat another tournament team in Virginia 1-0, and then tied with them 1-1.
West Virginia was able to receive a first round bye, and will take on the winner of Furman (8-0-2) and Rice (12-2-1). Furman was the winner of the Southern Conference, while Rice was the winner of Conference USA.
This year’s tournament is being held entirely in Cary, North Carolina and its surrounding areas. The Mountaineers will play their first game on May 1, at 3 p.m. at WakeMed Field #2.
The bracket puts the Mountaineers in possible matchups against No. 12 BYU in the third round, and No. 4 TCU in the quarterfinals.
This is the Mountaineers 21st consecutive season making the tournament, and will look to make it past the Round of 16 for the first time since 2016.
