With the minor league regular season winding down, we get you caught up on what the WVU Baseball Alumni are doing in the MiLB and the MLB for the week of 8/19-8/24.
Jedd Gyorko – St. Louis Cardinals
Gyorko saw action 6 times this week for the Cardinals. On 8/19 in an away series facing the Phillies, Gyorko would go 2-5 with 1 run, 1 home run, and 2 RBIs. The next day Gyorko would not have a great outing going 0-4 but would bounce back on 8/21 going 2-5 with 2 runs, 1 home run, and 2 RBIs to finish off the series. On 8/23 the Cardinals would return home to face the New York Mets in a home series. To start off the series, Gyorko would go 0-3 while going 2-5 with 2 runs the next day. To finish off the week, Gyorko would go 2-5 with 2 runs, 1 home run, and 1 RBI. Gyorko brings his batting average to .249 on the season.
Bobby Boyd – Corpus Christi Hooks, Double A (Astros)
Boyd saw action 6 times this week for the Hooks.On 8/19, Boyd and the Hooks would travel to Arkansas for a 3 game series. In the first game of the series, Boyd would go 2-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. On 8/20, Boyd would go 1-4 while finishing up the series going 1-5. Later in the week on 8/23, Boyd would return back to Corpus Christi to play Midland in a 4 game home series. To start off the home stand, Boyd would go 1-3. The next day on 8/24, Boyd would go 0-3, and then on 8/25 would go 0-5. Boyd has a batting average of .282 on the season.
Harrison Musgrave – Albuquerque Isotopes, Triple-A (Rockies)
Musgrave only saw action once this week for the Isotopes. In a home series facing El Paso, Musgrave pitched on 8/24 for 6.1 innings. In the 6.1 innings that Musgrave pitched, he allowed 0 runs off of 6 hits and struck out 8 batters. Musgrave now has an ERA of 3.48 on the season.
John Means – Bowie Baysox, Double A (Orioles)
Means saw action twice this week for the Baysox. On 8/20, Means would pitch for 5.2 innings facing Akron. In the 5.2 innings, Means allowed 3 runs off of 6 hits while striking out 4 batters. After a couple days of rest, Means would pitch against Binghamton. Means pitched 6.0 innings facing Binghamton and allowed 1 run off of 7 hits while striking out 2 batters. Means has an ERA of 3.62 on the season.
Sean Carley – Tampa Yankees, Single A Advanced (Yankees)
Carley was moved up to the Single A Advanced league for the Yankees called the Tampa Yankees. Carley will also be playing the Dunedin Bluejays a few times a month, the team of Mountaineer Ryan McBroom. To make his Tampa debut, Carley pitched on 8/20 facing Brevard County for 4.0 innings and allowed 1 run off of 2 hits while striking out 4 batters. Carley has an ERA of 2.27 on the season.
Corey Walter – Midland Rockhounds, Double A (Athletics)
Walter would pitch once this week for Midland. On 8/24, Walter would pitch against the team of Mountaineer, Bobby Boyd. Walter pitched for 3.0 innings and allowed 2 runs off of 6 hits while striking out 2 batters. Walter has an ERA of 2.25 on the season.
Ryan McBroom – Dunedin Bluejays, Single A (BlueJays)
McBroom saw action 5 times this week for Dunedin. In an away series facing Lakeland, on 8/19, McBroom would go 3-4 with 3 RBI’s while on 8/20 going 0-6. Three days later McBroom was back on the field facing the Tampa Yankees in a 3 game away series. On 8/23 to start off the series, McBroom would go 1-3 with 1 run and 1 home run. The next day on 8/24, McBroom would go 1-3 while finishing off the series on 8/25 going 0-4. McBroom now has a batting average of .269 on the season.
Blake Smith – Burlington Bees, Single A (Angles)
Smith saw action twice this week for the Bees. In a home series facing Kane County, on 8/22 Smith would pitch for 2.0 innings and would allow 0 hits while striking out 2 batters. On 8/25, Smith would be back on the mound pitching for 2.0 innings and allowed 1 run off of 3 hits while taking a loss in the game. Smith now has an ERA of 2.61 on the season
Cam O’Brien – Bluefield Bluejays, Single A Rookie (BlueJays)
O’Brien is getting alot more playing time for Bluefield playing 6 games for the Bluejays this week. To start the week off, O’Brien would continue an away series from last week facing Pulaski. On 8/19, O’Brien would go 1-3 with 1 run, 1 home run, and 2 RBIs. The next day O’Brien would not have much luck going 0-2 against Pulaski. On 8/22 the Bluejays would start an away series facing Danville and would start it out by going 0-4 but would bounce back the next day going 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI. On 8/24, O’Brien would play at home against Pulaski and would go 0-3 but would bounce back the next day in Pulaski going 2-3 with 3 runs, 1 home run, and 3 RBIs. O’Brien brings his batting average to .310 on the season.
Ray Guerrini – Bakersfield Blaze, Single A Advanced (Mariners)
Guerrini only played twice this week for the Blaze. On 8/20 in an away series facing Stockton, Guerrini would go 1-2 with 1 run in the game. Later in the week on 8/24, Guerrini would face San Jose at home and would go 1-2 with 2 runs scored. Guerrini brings his batting average to .255 on the season.
