WVUPros NFL recap: night 2 of preseason games

Football is officially here. The preseason has begun and with that means more opportunities to see your favorite WVUPros excelling in the NFL. Friday night brought several WVUPros to the gridiron.

Don Barclay and the Green Bay Packers lined up against the Cleveland Browns in a 17-11 victory over the Browns. Barclay played both guard and center during Friday’s game. Barclay and the Packers play next Thursday against Karl Joseph, Bruce Irvin and the Oakland Raiders.

JT Thomas, Will Johnson and the New York Giants faced off against the Miami Dolphins Friday night as well. Thomas did not play due to injury and unfortunately the Giants did not win, losing in a 27-10 loss. Thomas, Johnson and the Giants face Marquis Lucas and the Buffalo Bills next Saturday.

The Cincinnati Bengals have one of the more dominant defenses in the NFL, as well as a bevy of WVUPros on the roster. Adam Jones, Mario Alford and Will Clarke all suited up in Friday night’s one-point loss to the Minnesota Viking, losing 17-16. Alford had one reception for 14 yards in Friday’s game. Alford is also taking kick and punt returns this season, having one kickoff return for 30 yards and one punt return for 9 yards. Clarke had two tackles for the defense on the night. Alford’s role with the Bengals will be an exciting story line to watch this season as he seems to be emerging into more roles for the team. Maybe we will even see a “Super Mario” style play like the West Virginia-Alabama game several years ago?

Finally, in the late game of Friday’s game came the moment Mountaineer fans have waited ten months for. Safety Karl Joseph returned to the field, suiting up with Bruce Irvin for the Oakland Raiders’s 31-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Joseph got to start the game, playing in the first series alongside Irvin. Both Irvin and Joseph had one tackle each on that first series. Joseph is arguably one of the most adored Mountaineers and WVUPros, so playing the first series of the game was just a taste of what’s to come for the safety and Raiders during the regular season. This defensive duo and the Raiders play their next game next Thursday against the Packers.

Saturday’s games bring several more opportunities to see WVUPros in action. Pat McAfee, Marquis Lucas, Mark Glowinksi, Tavon Austin, Terrell Chestnut, Shaq Petteway, Dreamius Smith, and Quinton Spain are all a part of organizations with games tonight. Football is officially back, and pretty soon it will be the time to bring on the Mountaineers.
