MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The Football Writer’s Association of America announced that West Virginia University’s senior safety Karl Joseph was named to the 2015 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List on Friday. The award is given annually to college football’s top defensive player.
Joseph was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List earlier in the week. was an all-Big 12 first-team selection last season after recording 92 tackles, 62 solo, with an interception and three pass breakups.
Players may be added or removed from the watch list as the season progresses. The FWAA will announce a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday from early September through mid November. If not already on the watch list, the honored player will be added at that time.
Five finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 19, 2015 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet, presented by ACN, will be held on Dec. 7, 2015 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte.
The FWAA has named a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. Two years later, the award’s name was changed to honor the legendary Nagurski.
He was a dominant two-way player at the University of Minnesota and went on to become a star for the Chicago Bears. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
The winner of the Nagurski award will be announced on Dec. 10 at the Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta.
Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III won the 2014 Nagurski Award and is one of 88 players on this season’s watch list.
