MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Nick Snyder took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and No. 17 West Virginia defeated in-state foe Marshall 2-0 on Tuesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
With two outs in the ninth, Erik Rodriguez hit a groundball at a diving Doanes. The second baseman got the throw off but the speedy Rodriguez beat out the throw and broke up Snyder’s no-hitter.
The junior southpaw tossed a scoreless nine innings for the Mountaineers (27-15). He issued one walk and struck out a career-high 16 batters. Snyder improved to 6-1 on the season.
WVU scored two runs on seven hits. The Thundering Herd (23-21) had just one hit.
Darius Hill went 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Mountaineers.
Though the first two innings the two teams were scoreless.
With two outs in the third, Snyder issued his only walk but managed to get out of the frame with his fifth strikeout of the game.
In the bottom of the inning, WVU jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Hill singled up the middle, scoring Brandon White.
The Mountaineers tacked on a run in the fifth on Ivan Gonzalez’s RBI single to left field.
Snyder struck out the side in the sixth before striking out two more in the seventh.
WVU remains at home for a three-game series against TCU beginning on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. (ET). It has been deemed a must-see pitching matchup between Alek Manoah and Nick Lodolo.
