WVU’s Nwachukwu named to Bednarik Award watch list

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–West Virginia University’s Noble Nwachukwu was named to the 22nd annual Bednarik Award Watch List on Tuesday.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of ’69 and the NFL Hall of Fame’s Class of ’67.

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound senior defensive lineman finished with 47 tackles, including 37 solo stops and a team-leading 8.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss.

Nwachukwu was the Big 12’s returning sack leader. He was ranked No. 5 in sacks and No. 12 in tackles for loss and he was No. 2 in sacks and No. 3 in tackles for loss in conference games only.

The Big 12 has 12 players on the Bednarik watch list.

Bednarik candidates include Taylor Young, LB (Baylor), Dante Barnett, S (K-State), Elijah Lee, LB (K-State), Jordan Evans, LB (Oklahoma), Jordan Thomas, CB (Oklahoma), Charles Walker, DT (Oklahoma), Jordan Sterns, S (Oklahoma State), Josh Carraway, DE (TCU), Travin Howard, LB (TCU), James McFarland, DE (TCU), Malik Jefferson, LB (Texas) and Nwachukwu.

The Bednarik Awards will be announced October 31, 2016, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled November 21, 2016. The winners of the 2016 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 8, 2016.
