MORGANTOWN, W.Va– The Football Writers Association of America announced that West Virginia junior center Tyler Orlosky has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List.
Orlosky is one of 81 linemen (offense and defense) that are up for the award. Of those linemen, 16 play in the SEC. The Pac-12 has 13, the Big Ten and Big 12 both have 11.
Orlosky is an Academic All-Big 12 Second Team member that started all 13 games last season and saw action on more than 1,000 plays.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound center helped the offense average 499.8 yards per game of total offense, 33.5 points, 182.8 rushing yards and 317.0 passing yards last season.
West Virginia’s offense ranked No. 9 nationally in passing offense, No. 11 in first-down offense, No. 12 in total offense, No. 34 in scoring offense, No. 43 in rushing offense and No. 45 in third-down offense.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the FWAA All-America Team. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
The list will be narrowed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 19, 2015. The FWAA will name three Outland Trophy finalists on Nov. 24.
The Outland Trophy is named after the late John Outland. He was an All-America lineman at Penn. He played both tackle and halfback. Outland was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
The Outland Trophy winner will be announced on ESPN on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 10 in Atlanta.
