When new Big 12 commissioner Brad Yormark took over, he set his sights on expanding the conference. After adding new conference members Houston, BYU, Cincinnati and UCF, the conference is now appearing to head to a new location to play football and basketball games.
First reported by The Houston Chronicle, Yormak is looking to host football and basketball games (both men’s and women’s) in Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico. Basketball games would be hosted at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, which has a capacity of 22,300 and football games would be hosted at the 53,00 seated El Gigante de Acero.
The league is looking to begin hosting basketball games under the border during the 2024-25 season, and football games in the 2025 season, according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.
This is the first year the Big 12 is under Yormark’s leadership and he has already struck a new television deal and is continuing to look towards expanding the conference’s reach.
Dellenger also reports one of the basketball games preferred to be played in Mexico is Kansas against Houston, which is likely a top 10 matchup.
