West Virginia women’s soccer scored in the third minute on Sunday.

That lone goal would hold to be the difference as the Mountaineers beat Duquesne 1-0.

Senior midfielder/defender Maddie Moreau scored just two minutes and 28 seconds into the match. Moreau was in a crowd in the box, but beat Duquesne goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer for the score.

While the Mountaineers (2-2) would total 22 shots and six shots on goal, that would be the only chance that found the back of the net for the Mountaineers. Once again, WVU’s defense held strong, holding Duquesne’s (1-3) attack to just six shots total and two shots on goal.

The goal for Moreau was her second of the 2023 campaign as she got on the board last Sunday against Saint Francis. Moreau’s goal was assisted by Dilary Heredia-Beltran, who tallied her second assist of the season as well.

Heredia-Beltran continued to be a force for WVU’s offense, as she had a team-high five shots on Sunday. She now has a team-leading 13 shots through WVU’s first four games of the year.

Goalkeeper Kayza Massey was once again solid in net, picking up two saves in the win.

West Virginia will be back on the road this upcoming Thursday, traveling to face No. 5 Virginia, and then squaring off against Liberty next Sunday.

The Mountaineers continue what has been a hard non-conference schedule early this fall, as they will be playing their third top-10 opponent in five games against the Cavaliers this Thursday.
