Former West Virginia women’s basketball head coach Mike Carey is headed to another Big 12 school.
Carey, who coached at West Virginia from 2001-2022, is joining University of Central Florida’s coaching staff as an assistant.
Carey, a Clarksburg native, piled up 447 wins at WVU including, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, a Big 12 regular season title, as well as a Big 12 Tournament title.
Carey stepped down following the 2021-2022 season, and the Mountaineers are on their second head coach in as many years since his departure.
West Virginia faces Carey’s UCF squad twice this season. The first is on Jan. 13 in Orlando, and the second is on Jan. 30 in Morgantown.
West Virginia’s 2023-2024 roster has three players on their roster from Carey’s final season including Jayla Hemingway, Messiah Hunter, and JJ Quinerly.
