After three team victories in the Big 12 Match Play Championship last week, the WVU golf team sent four golfers to the Xavier Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, including the tournament’s runner-up, Oli Ménard.
Ménard, a senior, competed as an individual in Cincinnati alongside fellow senior Will Stakel, 6’6″ junior Pierce Grieve, and sophomore Westy McCabe. The four players did not participate in last week’s matches.
The second place finish is the highest Ménard has ever placed in a collegiate tournament. His three-under-par score ranks as the second best of his career, just behind his eight-under-par third place finish at the Minnesota Golf Classic as a sophomore. This was Ménard’s third tournament of his senior season.
Will Stakel placed second of the Mountaineer golfers, scoring 15-over-par in his three rounds. He improved by one stroke in each and finished 41st of the 68 participants. Grieve finished just behind Stakel at 16-over-par in his first outing of the season, and McCabe tied for 51st at a +20 mark in his third invitational of the season.
West Virginia will play in the University of South Alabama’s Steelwood Collegiate Invitational on the weekend of October 28th in Loxley, Alabama. It will be the team’s last tournament of the calendar year, and they will resume play at the N.I.T. on January 29th.
