On Saturday, WVU quarterback Garrett Greene matched WVU royalty, as he became the first WVU quarterback to rush for three touchdowns in a single game since Pat White did so in his senior season at Louisville in 2008.

Pat White, WVU’s second all-time leading rusher with 4,480 yards, was the last quarterback to accomplish this feat while wearing the gold and blue when he ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns against the Louisville Cardinals. White also added 122 yards and two passing touchdowns en route to a 35-21 road win against the Cardinals.

Greene, the Florida native, took well to his homecoming game, as the junior threw for 156 yards with no interceptions, but won the game for the Mountaineers with his 55 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

“I think this offense can be as good as I let it,” Greene said after the win at UCF. “A lot of it falls on my shoulders.”

In WVU’s previous Big 12 road win at TCU, Greene also willed his team to victory with his legs, as the Tallahassee native ran for 80 yards with two scores in a 24-21 win over the Horned Frogs.

While Greene did not sit back and pick apart UCF defenders this afternoon, he has proven to be a true dual-threat, as the 5-foot-11 signal caller threw for nearly 400 yards with two passing touchdowns and an additional two touchdowns on the ground in WVU’s heartbreaking loss at Houston, while also adding 249 yards and two touchdowns and an interception against Oklahoma State.

Greene has showed his toughness and leadership abilities in the six games he’s played thus far, and his skillset presents some true problems for Big 12 defenses when they have to prepare for pocket passing, read options, designed runs, and the ability to scramble on potential broken plays.

“We [West Virginia] have a shot every week because of him [Greene],” head coach Neal Brown said after the victory. “Every game we play, he’s going to give us a shot to win the game, but he’s got to play within himself.”

Playing within himself will be the key for Greene throughout the remaining four regular season games, and if the speedy quarterback lets the game come to him, he has proven he can be truly special.
