No. 5 West Virginia lost to No. 4 Texas 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on Monday.

Texas dominated possession of the ball early, with junior midfielder Lexi Missimo drilling a goal in the top right of the goal to put the Longhorns up 1-0 in just the ninth minute. Both junior forward Trinity Byars and junior forward Jilly Shimkin assisted on the goal.

The Longhorns continued to push ahead, scoring their second goal of the match at 14-minute mark off Byars’ right foot with an assist by Missimo. Massimo sought out her second goal of the game soon after with a shot at the top center of the net that was saved by fifth-year goalkeeper Kayza Massey.

Massey would have two saves in the first 45 minutes, finishing with five on the afternoon.

Texas would continue their pursuit as a foul committed by fifth-year midfielder Maya McCutcheon led to a penalty kick for Missimo that was shot to the bottom right of the net and good for the third goal of the match for the Longhorns 39 minutes into the match.

The Longhorns took a 3-0 lead into halftime, forcing

Down three goals, the Mountaineers found the back of the net for the first time in the 57th minute, with a shot by Heredia-Beltran into the bottom right of the goal off an assist by freshman forward Jordyn Wilson.

The Mountaineers were locked down offensively by the Longhorn defense throughout the match, only getting three shots on goal off, with only one scoring. 

The Longhorns held on to win 3-1 to move on to the semifinals.
