The Big 12 football standings are going to hopefully have a much clearer picture at the top following week 11.
Currently there are seven of the 14 teams who have either one or two conference losses. Out of those seven teams, only two of them are playing each other in West Virginia and Oklahoma. The winner of the game stays alive to advance to Dallas, while the loser is going to be out of the conference championship conversation.
Out of the seven, all of them except for one (Oklahoma State), play another team in the top-seven either this week or next.
The Frontrunners (Oklahoma State and Texas)
Currently Texas and Oklahoma State are tied atop the Big 12 standings at 5-1. It seems as though the Cowboys have the easiest path to Dallas, playing UCF, Houston, and BYU, over the final three weeks of the regular season. Those three teams have a combined 5-13 Big 12 record, however two of those games are on the road.
Texas also has a somewhat easy schedule, with games against TCU, Iowa State, and Texas Tech. The Longhorns are the last remaining chance for a Big 12 school to make the College Football Playoff as they only have one loss. Texas does have to travel to Fort Worth and to Ames before ending the season at home, so it is somewhat likely they pick up their second loss and send the Big 12 title race into major chaos.
Decided This Week
One team out of the seven will be eliminated from Big 12 title contention. West Virginia and Oklahoma are both 4-2. A three-loss team has never made the Big 12 Championship game, and therefore the loser of this game is out of title contention.
Stay out of trouble
For the rest of the five teams still in this, it’s just don’t lose. Besides Texas and Oklahoma State, the other two-loss teams are going to have to run the table over the next three weeks if they want to end up in Dallas. Therefore, they must not lose. This week that means Kanas holding serve at home against Texas Tech, Kansas State beating Baylor at home, Oklahoma State beating UCF on the road, while Texas and Iowa State hit the road to face TCU and BYU respectively.
