Marshall and West Virginia met in the second iteration of the Mountain State Derby on Sunday, in the Sun Belt Championship game.
After a back and forth first half, things were tied 2-2, until the 77th minute as a Marshall goal would give them the 3-2 win and the Sun Belt Tournament title.
West Virginia’s Sergio Ors Navarro took a second chance shot off a free kick in the 18th minute to put the Mountaineers up early.
With the Herd threatening, Matthew Bell put a pass right on target for Alvaro Garcia-Pascual inside the box to tie it for the Herd in the 25th minute.
Ors Navarro responded swiftly with a goal to the bottom left corner of the goal to put the Mountaineers ahead 2-1 in the 31st minute.
West Virginia received a yellow card at the end of the first half for dissent.
After an outstanding defensive save in a chippy second half by Max Broughton in the 75th minute, the Herd scored a go-ahead goal in the 77th minute by Alvaro Garcia-Pascual to put the Herd ahead 3-2.
The Herd held on to secure the 2023 Sun Belt Tournament Championship and will likely receive the first seed in the NCAA tournament. The selection show will be tomorrow at 1 p.m.
