Former West Virginia quarterback Will Grier has been waived by the New England Patriots, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter announced this morning.

Yesterday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked to name a starting quarterback for Sunday afternoon’s game vs. the New York Giants and he said “I’ve told everybody to be ready to go.” Grier was slated to be the third-string quarterback on the depth chart heading into this weekend’s contest.

Instead, Grier will hit the waivers. Grier began this season on the Dallas Cowboys’ roster before being cut and signed to the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. The Patriots signed Grier to their 53-man roster from the Bengals practice squad before eventually waiving him.

Grier last played for WVU in 2018. In his senior season, he threw for 3,864 yards, 38 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions.
