On Wednesday morning, WVU mega-donor and founder of Country Roads Trust Ken Kendrick opened up on his thoughts of former WVU men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins on Hoppy Kercheval’s Talkline show.

When asked if WVU should consider revisiting Coach Huggins for the now national search for a new head basketball coach, Kendrick, a part-owner and managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, said, “I think he has no place in the lives of young men who deserve quality leadership.” Kendrick added that, “His [Huggins] future with WVU sports is totally at an end.”

Kendrick, a Princeton native and WVU graduate, also said that WVU was, “too lenient with him [Huggins]” during the original turmoil that ensued after Huggins’ inappropriate remarks on a Cincinnati radio show last spring.

Despite the candid tone, Kendrick said, “Alcoholism is a disease, and he [Huggins] has had that disease for a long time. Kendrick went on to say that he hopes the rehabilitation Coach Huggins has sought will work for him.

Before opening up about coach Huggins, Kendrick offered his thanks to interim head coach Josh Eilert for his time of leadership for the Mountaineers. “I want to thank Coach Eilert as well. I think he inherited an incredibly difficult situation and handled it with grace, and I wish him the best.”

Eilert was let go on Wednesday morning following the conclusion of WVU’s season on Tuesday. West Virginia will now move forward in its national search for a head basketball coach, as it seems a new era is on the horizon.
