The men’s basketball transfer portal officially opened on Monday, Mar. 18, with postseason basketball officially beginning this week.
Compared to previous seasons the period a player can enter the portal has shortened from 60 days to 45 days, with the portal closing on May 1 this year. However, a player does not have to choose a new school by May 1.
Additionally, if a coach is fired, players from that school have a 30-day period to enter the portal. Another change is that players who have transferred multiple times will not be penalized by having to sit out with their new team.
The 30-day window changed WVU’s roster this past summer after Bob Huggins resigned from his head coaching position.
Although the NCAA does not officially announce players that have entered the portal there are many accounts across social media that do such as @RivalsPortal on X. Players posting on social media themselves is another way to stay informed on decisions.
After last season, over 1,800 men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal. West Virginia added players such as Akok Akok, RaeQuan Battle, Jeremiah Bembry, Jesse Edwards, Noah Farrakhan, Kerr Kriisa and Quinn Slazinski.
With NIL only getting more advanced and becoming a bigger factor in college athletics it is huge driver into players decisions, with some players entering in hopes of attaining more money. With established platforms such as the Country Roads Trust, West Virginia is one of the top schools in the nation in terms of NIL.
