West Virginia gymnastics secured a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships on Saturday, with a total score of 195.125.
Competing against No. 1 Oklahoma, BYU, Denver and Iowa State, the Sooners would go on to win their 15th Big 12 Gymnastics Championship (198.95). Denver would place second (197.975), followed by BYU (197.05), Iowa State (196.35) and the Mountaineers.
Beginning on the beam, sophomore Emma Wehry opened the scoring with a 9.85. Although starting strong, a later bobbly performance from junior Anna Leigh (9.235) left the Mountaineers with a large deficit. West Virginia would tally a total beam score of 48.875.
Moving onto the floor, both freshman Jurnee Lane and Amber Lowe would score a 9.8. Fifth-year Abbie Pierson would cap the event with a 9.9, tying her season high on the floor. Scoring a total of 49.15, the Mountaineers would remain in fifth place.
With their third rotation on the vault, senior Kiana Lewis would land a new career-high of 9.9. Pierson paced the squad with a 9.825, garnering the Mountaineers a season-high vault score of 49.125.
Finishing up on the bars, sophomore Miranda Smith’s faulty score of 8.925 led the Mountaineers to a weak start. With further performances from Wehry (9.7) and freshman Jayden McDonnell (9.825), West Virginia were able to cap off the event with a score of 47.975.
Following the championship, West Virginia is currently ranked No. 51 in the nation and fifth in the Big 12.
The Mountaineers are next in action at the NCAA Regional Championships on Apr. 4-6, with the event being streamed on ESPN+.
