In a 7-2 West Virginia win over TCU on Friday, shortstop JJ Wetherholt had his first multi-home run game of his collegiate career, as the Mountaineers tied the series at a game apiece.

Wetherholt was accountable for four RBIs in the victory with both of his homers being two-run shots, he was also intentionally walked in the seventh. On top of Wetherholt, Brodie Kresser and Logan Sauve also picked up two hits.

After working through kinks in the fourth, WVU starter Derek Clark ended up making a quality start. He pitched eight innings, throwing 116 pitches, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out six

In the top of the third, Wetherholt hit his seventh home run of the year, which was also his 200th career hit, a two-run shot to get West Virginia on the board first. After Grant Hussey hit a two-run homer of his own later in the top of the third, TCU starter Kole Klecker’s day was done after two-and-two-thirds as the Mountaineers led 4-0 early. Both home runs were 108 miles per hour of the bat with Hussey’s traveling 437 feet and Wetherholt’s 411.

Just an inning later, Wetherholt would hit another two-run home run, a no-doubter to extend WVU’s lead even further, as they lead 6-0. In the bottom half of the frame, TCU’s Logan Maxwell hit a solo shot on a ball nearly robbed by Ben Lumsden in right-center. The Horned Frogs followed it up with a double and an infield single, with a throwing error by Clark, which allowed another run to score.

In the sixth the Mountaineers would hit another homer, this time off the bat of Brodie Kresser, putting them up 7-2. That would be the last run scored of the game as Hambleton Oliver closed it out for West Virginia in the ninth.

The rubber match and last game of the regular season is set for a 5 p.m. EST first pitch on Friday. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
