Former WVU pitcher Alek Manoah had his best start of the season Sunday, in a 5-2 Blue Jays win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 6-foot-6 righty pitched seven innings, allowing just one hit, a walk and no runs, while striking out seven, picking up his first win of the season. Manoah began his season in the minors rehabbing right shoulder tightness and has struggled on the mound ever since a breakout after a breakout season in 2022.
Toronto’s former first-round draft pick made his season debut on May 5 vs the Washington Nationals and has only pitched on Sundays so far this year. Last Sunday, Manoah pitched seven innings against the Minnesota Twins allowing three runs, none of them earned in a 5-1 loss.
On the season he has a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts across 18 innings pitched. If the trend of his usage continues, the next time Manoah will pitch will be next Sunday May 26 against the Detroit Tigers.
