MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 20, 2024) – The West Virginia University golf team has been the WVU Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The Mountaineers tied for third place at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since the program was reinstated in 2015. WVU earned a spot in the national championships with a three-day total of 285-280-280=845 to finish 5-over-par for the tournament.
Junior Max Green once again led the way for WVU, shooting 1-under-par to finish the tournament in sixth place with a final score of 71-69-69=209 (-1). Classmate Todd Duncan finished in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, carding scores of 73-70-70=213 (+3).
Sophomore Kaleb Wilson finished tied for 22nd place with a 71-70-73=214 (+4) total, while senior Jackson Davenport turned in a 1-over-par 71 in the final round to finish 75-71-71=217 (+7). Junior Pierce Grieve rounded out WVU’s lineup in 49th with a pair of Even-par performances for a 70-82-70=222 (+12) final total.
The Mountaineers will compete in the NCAA Golf Championship from May 24-29, at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. It will be WVU’s first appearance in the NCAA Golf Championship since 1947.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia is set to partake in the Big 12 Baseball Championship this week at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas … the Mountaineers earned the No. 4 seed and will play No. 9 seed TCU on Tuesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. ET … if WVU wins, it will next play Thursday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m. … if WVU loses on Tuesday, it will play Wednesday, May 22, at 10 a.m. against the loser of the Kansas-Kansas State contest … semifinals will take place on Friday with the championship game on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers won their final series of the season on the road at TCU … the Horned Frogs won on May 16, 6-3, before WVU came back to win on Friday, 7-2, and Saturday, 6-5 … sophomore Ben Lumsden hit a home run in the opener before the Mountaineers hit four in Friday’s win, getting two off the bat of junior JJ Wetherholt and one each from juniors Brodie Kresser and Grant Hussey … senior Derek Clark earned his seventh win of the season on Friday by allowing just two runs in eight innings while striking out six … in Saturday’s victory, senior Reed Chumley hit a home run and drove in four to pace the offense … junior Tyler Switalski tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win.
Notes: The Mountaineers earned the No. 4 seed in the Big 12 Championship after going 19-11 in conference play this season … WVU has already set a single-season program record with 86 home runs this season, surpassing the mark of 81 set just last year … Wetherholt joined the 200-hit club with his first home run on Friday night, becoming just the fourth player in WVU history to reach the milestone in three seasons … the Mountaineers are in good shape to make an NCAA regional with an RPI of 33 entering this week … the NCAA selection show will be Monday, May 27, at noon on ESPN2.
