During a productive offseason for head coach Neal Brown and his staff, WVU added multiple defensive transfers to bolster that side of the ball.
Brown feels very optimistic about the depth he has on both sides of the ball this year, seeing a noticeable difference from years in the past. Mountaineer senior defensive lineman Sean Martin added to that point and what he notices defensively.
“We actually [have] a lot more depth than we had last year. We got a lot more people that can play more roles,” Martin said Thursday. “We got a lot more versatility now, I would say.”
On top of depth, Brown stated that this West Virginia team looks the part in being a power-four contender due to size. Martin was asked about that and ultimately agreed with Brown compared to his first couple years in Morgantown.
“I would say that yeah (on the team looking like ‘bigger’), we got a lot more people my size on the D-line. We [have] a bigger linebacker group. We got more safeties, more corners,” Martin said. “I believe that we will be a great competitor in the power-four conference.”
Heading into his senior season, Martin the 6-foot-5 290-pound product of Bluefield, West Virginia will look to lead by example and be key to the Mountaineers’ defensive success in the trenches. Martin may not be the most outspoken because he said that’s the way he’s always been, but will speak up and coach teammates when necessary.
