MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Aug. 30, 2024) – The No. 4 West Virginia University men’s soccer team won its third straight game to begin the season on Friday, defeating George Washington, 4-0, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Four different players found the back of the net for the Mountaineers, including graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro with his sixth goal of the season, the most in the nation.
Graduate student Simon Carlson collected his third goal of the year and his NCAA-leading fourth assist, while junior Felix Ewald scored his second goal of the season and junior Marcus Caldeira his first. Ewald also had an assist in the game as did junior Barrett Saul and sophomore Constantinos Christou.
For the second straight game, West Virginia did not allow a shot on goal while the Mountaineers had 11. Overall, WVU outshout George Washington, 20-2 while also having a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Ors Navarro got the scoring started in the 24th minute as he headed in a cross from Ewald to put the Mountaineers on top.
Carlson doubled the lead in the 34th minute, collecting a rebound before firing a shot past the keeper. Caldeira followed just two minutes later with his first goal of the year as he made a run toward the box and took a pass from Carlson, making one move before burying the ball in the back of the net.
Ewald put the finishing touch on the game in the 66th minute with his second goal of the year, taking a pass from Christou in the box before scoring. During the play, Saul had a beautiful dummy to get the ball to a wide-open Ewald.
The Mountaineers will hit the road for the first time this season for their next two games as they head out west to California. WVU will take on California Baptist on Friday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m. ET before playing Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. ET. The Mountaineers defeated both teams in 2023 including defeating the Lions in the NCAA quarterfinals.
